Birth Story

Hello, my name is Dusty Olivas Gamez. I was born on August 9, 1997. My mother  wasn’t sure if she would be a great mother and wasn’t sure what would happen. When she was pregnant she used to eat mangos all the time because it was her favorite fruit. She was also obsessed with Mexican candy.

My mom was at the Glenwood Springs hospital but had to be flown to Denver in a helicopter. My mom was in lots of pain; she was taken to a hospital in Denver because there were complications with my birth. My dad was at work when he was contacted by the hospital and told that they were going to fly her out to Denver. My Dad couldn’t leave work so he quit, drove his old Ford pickup truck to Denver. My Moms contractions were  getting really close together, and the pilot told my mom we would be there in less than four minutes and to hold on. I was born on top of the Porter Adventist Hospital-inside a helicopter.  The Time was 1:51 pm my mom says. There used to be a huge clock that you could see from the building besides the hospital. My Mother says I was born with dark blue eyes and was smiling. I was her first child, and she kept crying. She wouldn’t let anyone touch me even the nurse had to assure her that I would be given back to her later. And My dad arrived two hours later to find me asleep. He kept smiling and decided it would be the last time he would drink alcohol.

                                                   My family

My family consists of three guys, my dad and my younger brother. My dad name is Guadalupe Olivas, he is fifty two years old and he loves to work. He enjoys working and making food for my brother and I. He is a genuine guy and always seems to have good advice. He enjoys watching Bull riding, and used to do it himself.  My younger brother, Carlos David Olivas, he is sixteen and has the biggest grin. He always loves to laugh and will do it for hours. He isn’t afraid to be himself and is constantly smiling. He love football and cycling with a passion, and he does it often. You will never see him miss a Broncos game. Carlos is a very active guy and loves to run miles.

                                                    Pivotal moment

When I was in my freshmen year, I would go to school everyday but I would leave for lunch

and never come. I had amazing grades, but my attendance was terrible. I was ready to drop out

of school and work, it was hard to do both school and work. Tired. Miserable. Depressed. One of my teachers contacted my dad and we had this talk about if I did drop out. My dad told me if I dropped out he would kick me out, because he really thought school was important. He showed me how much money he makes without education, and gave me motivation to keep on going and to never stop trying. This changed everything because it made me enjoy school and actually put effort in class.

                                          What makes me Happy

Things that make me happy are: Looking at art, Drawing/painting, Watching movies in the Movie theatre and hanging out with my brother. I also enjoy hiking and doing sports. I love living in the moment and doing things, just because. I get excited when I get a new sketch book or art supplies! I love to experiment with different art mediums. I love helping people and doing work for the elderly.

                                           What makes me Sad

I don’t usually get sad easily,  but things that make me sad include:  Seeing other people sad, When I see really sad movies, and when I see my family arguing. I also don’t like when I see other people doing self-harm. People shouldn’t hurt themselves. I want people to enjoy life and when I see other people sad, I just want to help them out and get them back on their feet.

                                   Strengths, Talents, and Gifts

One thing I enjoy about myself is that I’m able to easily bounce back from terrible events. I am able to adapt to changes. I love working with people with different cultures and backgrounds. People say I have lots of empathy and I am able to understand people with a wide range of issues. I consider myself an artist, and I love drawing/painting. I’ve been drawing for four years now, and two years seriously.

Areas that need work, and weakness?

I’m not a very extroverted person, even though I love to talk to people. I would like to work on my communication skills. I’m working on becoming a more accepting and open person, and I want to be able to understand people more. My handwriting is not so great and I want to work on that.

                                      Spiritual history

I was raised Catholic,  and I was in that religion for most of my life. When I was 16 I decide to leave that religion. Part of me still believe in it, but another didn’t want it as a label. Catholicism is a very strict church, which says to not idolize people, but they idolize the Pope.  I wasn’t interested in being part of a church. So I just decided to leave it at Christian. I’m a Christian but not any particular church, I believe in a God, that loves everyone and is forgiving. In order for me to sleep, I have to pray. I pray for my Brother, my Dad, my Mom, my Aunts/uncles, and Cousins. I pray for our safety and protection from any issues. I hardly ever go to church and it’s rare for me to be in church. I love to learn about different religions.

                                                       What is Beauty?

What is beauty? Beauty is something gorgeous. Beauty is the breath-taking view of our mountain side. The unconditional love for someone, people who are kind and generous to the homeless or to the disabled. Beauty is not biased or judging. Beauty is beyond loving and will make your heart race. Beauty is seeing a doe with it’s calf. Beauty is seeing peace within people. Beauty is seeing people giving to the poor.

                                                  What Is Friendship?

Friendship to me means being there through the good and the bad. Friendship is taking care of each other. To me a good friendship is trusting each other, and helping one another. Friendship means having a good strong bond. Without the bond, the friendship wouldn’t last very long.

                                                   What Is Home?

Home, is very important to me. Home to me, means a place where you feel the most comfortable at. You can be yourself without feeling strange. Home means feeling secure; and I honestly feel that if you don’t have a home you won’t be able to feel relaxed, or feel comfortable. Home is a place where you can let loose, and de-stress. If I didn’t have a home I don’t think I’d feel comfortable, and I think my personality would shift to a survival one.

                              Being a Good Parent

Being a good parent requires for you to be patient, understanding, and loving. I think people who are parents needs to be patient because there will be lots of times when your are just over all the drama or just events- but you have can’t give up, and you have to keep going. As a parent, you need understanding. Each generation has different cultures/attitudes and you would need to understand your children instead of judging them and bringing them down. If your child was wanted to do a sport you didn’t like, you wouldn’t judge them. Lastly, no parent could be a good one if they truly didn’t love their children. You have to love your kids. If you love your kids they would love you more, and trust you more. Kids are more likely to tell their parents something if they love them.

                                    Right now

Right now I need to focus a lot on my personal growth. I really want to develop my character traits. I love talking to people, and having amazing experiences, but I’m really quiet and introverted. I would love to work on being able to talk more and experience things. I think that would help a lot for myself in the future.

Success to me is when you are content with what you have accomplished. Being Successful means learning and pulling off something beyond your current abilities. I’m working on being successful, but I’m very happy with what I’ve accomplished with my art career.

I am grateful for  My brother, My father, My mother, My family, my apartment, my bed, my blankets, the running water in my home. I’m grateful for the good moments in life, and for the experiences I have had in my life. I’m glad I have food in my home and money to spend.

Letter of Recommendation

To anyone who may concern,

I am David Lupo, General manager of one of the chains, of Kum and Go inc, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. During the period which Dusty worked for me, we were able to expand our business sales. This kid is phenomenal! Dusty is a great guy and is always smiling. He was able to get so much done in a short timespan, and would never complain. He was the only one in the whole store who NEVER called in. No matter if he was sick or tired, he would show up to work, that’s a very amazing thing to have in an employee. It was sad to see him go, but I understand that he will succeed in other ventures.

Thanks,

David Lupo.
